Getting A Federal Employer Identification Number

Every corporation will need to obtain a Federal Employer Identification Number from the Internal Revenue Service. This is necessary in order to maintain the separate existence of your corporation for income tax purposes.

Your banker will require you to have a Federal Employer Identification number in order to open a banking account, apply for credit and perform other business activities.

In order to obtain and Employer Identification Number, you will need to complete IRS Form SS-4. Your first step should be to download and printout IRS Form SS-4 along with instructions.

Download IRS FORM SS-4 - FORM AND INSTRUCTIONS

You should carefully fill out the form and follow the instructions. The instructions for Form SS-4 contain the address where the completed form can be transmitted by regular mail. However, you should be aware that there is a substantial delay in obtaining an EIN if you simply mail the application to the Internal Revenue Service.

SUGGESTION - The process can be speeded by calling the Internal Revenue Service at the telephone number that is included in the instructions. An IRS representative will take information over the telephone and issue you an Employer Identification Number at that time. You must then either fax or mail the completed application to the IRS. The IRS will follow-up by mailing written confirmation of your EIN.
